Crushed Stone Calculator

Quick answer: Crushed stone quantity is length × width × depth ÷ 27 for cubic yards, then × density for tons. Many crushed stone products run near 1.3 to 1.5 tons per yard. A 30 × 10 ft pad at 4 inches with 5% extra is about 3.9 yd³, or roughly 5.3 tons at 1.35. Use the supplier's number.

How the estimate works

Crushed stone is angular, so it locks together and compacts more than rounded stone. Products with fines (often called crusher run, road base or similar regional names) compact tighter and may need more extra. Clean crushed stone without fines drains freely. Names vary by region, so describe the use to your supplier and ask for its density.

30 × 10 = 300 ft². At 4 in: 100 ft³; with 5%: 105 ft³ ≈ 3.89 yd³ ≈ 5.25 tons at 1.35.

FAQ

Is crushed stone heavier than pea gravel?

Often similar per yard; it depends on rock and size. Ask for a measured density.

What size for a base?

Bases often use a graded product with fines; ask locally.

Converting to tonnes?

The result shows tonnes; 1 US ton ≈ 0.907 tonne.
