Paver Base Calculator

Quick answer: A paver base estimate needs the area, the compacted base depth (patios often 4 to 6 inches, driveways more) and a thin sand bed, often about 1 inch. A 12 × 12 ft patio with 6 inches of base and 1 inch of sand needs about 2.9 yd³ of base and 0.49 yd³ of sand with 10% extra.

How the estimate works

The base is calculated separately from the bedding layer because they are different products. Base material compacts, so suppliers often suggest ordering more than the loose volume; the extra field covers that. Required depth depends on soil, frost and traffic, which is a design decision for your installer or local guidance.

144 ft² × 0.5 ft × 1.10 = 79.2 ft³ ≈ 2.93 yd³ base ≈ 4.1 tons; sand 144 × (1/12) × 1.10 = 13.2 ft³ ≈ 0.49 yd³.

FAQ

Is this engineering?

No; it is volume math. Depth comes from your installer or local guidance.

Can I use pea gravel as base?

Rounded stone does not lock; ask your supplier.

Why extra?

Compaction and uneven subgrade.
