Driveway Gravel Calculator
Quick answer: For a driveway, enter its length and width in feet and a total depth of about 4 to 6 inches if you are topping an existing base. A 60 × 12 ft drive at 4 inches with 10% extra needs about 9.8 yd³, or roughly 13.7 tons at 1.4 tons per yard. Confirm depth and stone grade locally.
How the estimate works
Driveways lose thickness when compacted and when stone works into soft subgrade, so the default extra is higher here than for a garden path. If you are building a new drive, run the calculator once per layer: a coarse base, then a finer top course. Vehicle loads, frost and drainage make a driveway a structural job; the numbers here are only a material estimate.

60 ft × 12 ft = 720 ft². At 4 in: 720 × 0.333 = 240 ft³; with 10% extra, 264 ft³ ≈ 9.78 yd³. At 1.4 t/yd³ that is about 13.7 US tons, which is more than one small dump-truck load in many areas.
FAQ
How many tons for a 100 ft driveway?
At 12 ft wide and 4 in deep with 10% extra, roughly 16.3 yd³ or about 22.8 tons at 1.4 t/yd³.
Do I need a base layer?
New drives usually do. Read how much gravel for a driveway.
Will my pickup carry it?
Check the payload rating; one yard of gravel can weigh about 1.4 tonnes, often above a half-ton truck's rating.
