How Much Gravel For Driveway
Quick answer: A typical gravel driveway uses several inches of compacted base plus a few inches of finer top stone, often around 8 to 12 inches total for new builds on average soil, and about 2 to 4 inches for a refresh. Multiply length × width × depth ÷ 27 for yards. Soil, frost and traffic set the real depth.
Start by deciding what you are doing
There are two very different driveway jobs. A refresh adds a top layer to an existing, sound driveway that has thinned or developed potholes. A new build creates the whole structure on bare ground. A refresh might need a few yards; a new build can need many truckloads. Before you measure anything, decide which you are doing, because it changes the depth you enter by a factor of three or more.
Typical layer structure
New gravel driveways are often built in layers. The bottom layer uses larger angular stone to carry loads and bridge soft spots. A middle layer of smaller stone fills gaps. A top layer of finer angular stone, sometimes with fines, makes a smooth, compact running surface. Some builds also start with a geotextile on the subgrade to keep soil from mixing into the stone. Exact layer sizes and depths depend on your soil, climate and vehicles, and local contractors have strong opinions grounded in what works in their area.
| Layer | Common role | Example depth (illustrative) |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Load-bearing, coarse angular stone | 4–6 in |
| Middle | Fill voids, finer angular stone | 3–4 in |
| Top | Running surface, fine angular stone | 2–3 in |
These depths are examples of common practice, not a design. Heavy vehicles, soft clay, high water tables and deep frost all argue for more.
Measuring a driveway
Measure the length along the centre line, including curves, and the average width. Add separate rectangles for parking pads, turnarounds and flares at the road. If the driveway slopes, measure along the surface. For curved drives, walk the centreline with a measuring wheel. Write each section down and add the areas; the driveway gravel calculator accepts any length and width, so you can enter the total area as length with a width of one.
Quantity table
This table shows volume and weight for common driveway sizes at a few total depths, using 1.4 tons per yard and no extra allowance. Add 10% or more for compaction.
| Area | 3 in deep | 4 in deep | 8 in deep | 12 in deep |

Ordering and delivery tips
Most dump trucks carry somewhere between a few and a dozen or more yards depending on size; ask the supplier. For a new build, you will likely order each layer separately so it can be spread and compacted before the next arrives. Ask the driver to tailgate-spread if the base is firm enough; this saves hours of wheelbarrow work. Keep trucks off septic fields, buried lines and soft lawns. Before any digging, contact your local utility locate service.
Maintenance math
A gravel driveway is not a one-time purchase. Stone is pushed aside, carried off by snowplows and worked into the soil. Many owners add a thin top-up every few years. Estimating a maintenance top-up is the same arithmetic with a smaller depth: a 720 ft² drive at 1 in needs about 2.2 yd³.
When to ask a professional
If water ponds on the driveway, runs toward the house, or the surface keeps rutting despite top-ups, the problem is probably drainage or base, not top stone. That is the point to bring in a contractor. Our calculator gives you an honest volume; it cannot see your soil.
Turnarounds and parking pads
Turnarounds are often forgotten when measuring. A simple hammerhead or a widened pad by the garage can add hundreds of square feet. Measure them as separate rectangles. Where a driveway meets the road, many municipalities control the apron width and surface; check before widening.
Metric version
Metric quantities for drive-sized areas, with approximate tonnes at a density equal to 1.4 US tons per yard:
| Area (m²) | 10 cm: m³ / t | 20 cm: m³ / t | 30 cm: m³ / t |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40 m² | 4.00 / 4.72 | 8.00 / 9.44 | 12.00 / 14.16 |
| 70 m² | 7.00 / 8.26 | 14.00 / 16.52 | 21.00 / 24.78 |
| 110 m² | 11.00 / 12.98 | 22.00 / 25.96 | 33.00 / 38.94 |
Crown and drainage
Driveways shed water best with a slight crown or cross-slope so rain runs off rather than pooling in wheel ruts. Ditches or swales along the sides carry water away. If you are rebuilding, ask the contractor how they will shape the surface.
Before the truck arrives
Mark the drop spot, move vehicles, and confirm overhead wires and branches leave room for a raised dump bed.
Keep a record of what went into each layer, including product names and depths. Future contractors, and future you, will find it much easier to diagnose problems or plan a paving upgrade when the existing structure is documented rather than guessed.
Worked example
Illustrative examples (2026-10-29), not quotes or guarantees.
New drive 80 × 10 ft (800 ft²): base 4 in ≈ 9.9 yd³, middle 3 in ≈ 7.4 yd³, top 2 in ≈ 4.9 yd³ → about 22 yd³ before 10% extra, ≈ 24 yd³ and ≈ 34 t at 1.4. A later 1 in refresh ≈ 2.5 yd³.
FAQ
How deep should a gravel driveway be?
New builds often total around 8–12 in; refreshes 2–4 in. Local soil decides.
How many tons for a 2-car drive?
A 20 × 40 ft pad at 4 in is about 9.9 yd³ ≈ 13.8 t.
Should I use fabric?
Often recommended on soft soils; see fabric guide.
Is this an engineering design?
No. It is a volume estimate.
